When a Marketing MBA Has Strong ROI — and When It Doesn't

Marketing is one of the most popular MBA concentrations but one of the more nuanced ROI cases. Unlike consulting or finance — where the MBA credential is essentially required for top-firm entry-level roles — marketing has multiple non-MBA paths. The MBA's value depends entirely on which marketing track you are targeting.

Strong ROI: CPG Brand Management

P&G, Unilever, Kraft Heinz, Colgate, and PepsiCo hire almost exclusively into brand manager roles from MBA programs at Kellogg, Ross, Tuck, and Darden. The entry salary ($130K–$155K) combined with the structured brand management track — which feeds directly to Director and VP roles — produces strong 10-year earnings curves. Without an MBA, entering CPG brand management is very difficult at the top firms.

Strong ROI: Tech Product Marketing (Google, Apple, Meta)

Product Marketing Manager (PMM) roles at FAANG-tier companies pay $150K–$185K post-MBA and are actively recruited from Haas, Booth, and Sloan. The salary delta for a strong tech PMM versus a pre-MBA marketing manager can exceed $60K annually. The MBA is not required for PMM roles — many are filled from APM programs — but top programs provide direct recruiting access that is hard to replicate otherwise.
